Capalaba residents could gain a high-frequency public transport connection to Brisbane under the proposed Metro to Capalaba corridor, with the eastern route now included in Brisbane Metro expansion planning.
Metro To Capalaba Among Four Priority Corridors
The proposed Eastern Metro would run between Brisbane’s CBD and Capalaba, connecting central Brisbane and its eastern suburbs with neighbouring urban areas of Redland City.
It is one of four priority corridors being examined through the Brisbane Metro expansion business case, alongside proposed connections to Springwood, Carseldine and Brisbane Airport.
The business case will consider possible short-term, medium-term and long-term expansion opportunities, including route alignment, depot locations, network improvements and how new services could be delivered in stages.
An Expressions of Interest process for delivery of the business case has closed.
More Transport Choice For Redlands Coast
The Capalaba proposal is being considered against the area’s current access to high-frequency public transport.
Redland City Council has identified Redlands Coast as one of the largest urban communities in south-east Queensland without access to high-frequency public transport and has backed the Eastern Metro corridor as one way of addressing that gap.
If delivered, the connection is expected by council to provide residents with more public transport options, improve regional accessibility and encourage greater use of public transport while reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Capalaba is identified as Redland City’s Major Regional Activity Centre and principal employment, commercial and transport hub, placing the suburb at the centre of the proposed eastern connection.
The project has also been linked to longer-term planning for population growth, housing and employment opportunities across Redlands Coast.
Business Case To Shape Future Route
The Eastern Metro remains at the business-case stage, with work focused on determining how future expansion could operate and be delivered.
Community and industry advocacy for the Capalaba connection has included discussions between representatives from different levels of government, a delegation to BCC and the Let’s Go Metro! initiative involving industry, government and community participants.
The proposed corridor is also being considered as part of longer-term transport planning ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Redland City Council has formally supported the Eastern Metro and will provide its endorsed position paper to BCC, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Infrastructure Australia and other stakeholders involved in Brisbane Metro expansion planning.
