A large house party in Capalaba spilled into neighbouring streets and properties after police arrived to disperse more than 200 people, with bottles allegedly thrown at officers and a 43-year-old man later taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Emergency services were called to the area around Ney Road and Wildflower Street about 10:15pm on Saturday, 19 September following reports of a major disturbance. Additional police resources, including PolAir and specialist public-order officers, were brought in as the gathering broke up and people moved through surrounding properties.
Neighbours Caught Up as Party Breaks Up
Residents described groups moving through front and back yards as officers cleared the gathering, while broken glass was left along parts of the street. Some partygoers were reported to have jumped fences into neighbouring properties while others gathered outside nearby homes.
One neighbour said he had contacted triple-0 after seeing a Holden Commodore ute repeatedly travelling along the street and doing burnouts before police arrived. He estimated the vehicle had been travelling at more than 100km/h and said concerns that somebody could be seriously hurt prompted the emergency call.
Police sirens were followed by the arrival of PolAir, which was used to direct people away from Ney Road. Neighbours also reported seeing bottles thrown towards police vehicles as officers worked to bring the crowd under control.
Another resident said dozens of people moved into nearby yards as police approached, while others reported glass scattered across the road the following morning. The disturbance unfolded through an area residents described as normally quiet.
Man Remains Critical After Medical Episode
A 43-year-old man was found unresponsive at the scene and was given CPR after suffering a medical episode. He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition and remained critically ill on Monday afternoon.
A 16-year-old girl also collapsed during the incident and was taken to Redland Hospital in a stable condition. Three other people were assessed by paramedics, with two later taken home by a relative. Police arrested a 17-year-old boy during the response. He was charged with assaulting police and street offences and is due to appear in Cleveland Children’s Court on 16 October.
Neighbours later said the gathering had started as an 18th birthday party before gatecrashers arrived, although that account has not been presented as a confirmed police finding. Police are seeking information from anyone who may have CCTV, home-security or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the disturbance.
