A $500,000 Queensland Government commitment has moved plans to address one of the Redlands’ most persistent traffic bottlenecks a step forward, with a business case now underway for the Tingalpa Creek Bridge on Rickertt Road.
The study, led by Redland City Council, will examine options to duplicate or replace the existing bridge and investigate upgrades to the single-lane sections of Rickertt Road on both sides of Tingalpa Creek.
For Capalaba motorists travelling between the Redlands and Brisbane, the crossing has long been a familiar source of peak-hour congestion.
Business Case to Examine Upgrade Options
The Queensland Government announced the $500,000 funding commitment in May, with the business case expected to be completed by mid-2027.
The work will assess the scale and complexity of a future upgrade and compare options including duplication of the existing bridge or its replacement.
It will also investigate widening the constrained approaches, including the single-lane section on the southern Redlands side and the northern Brisbane side.
Redland City Council Mayor Jos Mitchell said the work would determine the cost-benefit of the different options and provide the groundwork needed for future investment.
Key Link for Capalaba Commuters
Rickertt Road provides an important route between Capalaba and Brisbane’s eastern suburbs, with traffic frequently slowing around the Tingalpa Creek crossing where the corridor narrows.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg described the bridge as a notorious bottleneck and said the business case was an important first step toward reducing congestion.
Capalaba MP Russell Field said planning for the project was needed to ensure infrastructure kept pace with growth across the Redlands.
Construction Funding Still to Come
The current $500,000 commitment covers planning and preparation of the business case only.
No funding has yet been committed to construction, and any future bridge duplication, replacement or road widening would require substantially more State and potentially Federal Government investment.
The completed business case, expected in mid-2027, will help determine the preferred solution and form the basis for future funding decisions.
