The event, organised by the Brisbane Bayside South Indian Association (BBSIA), will take place on Saturday, 31 October 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Sam Sciacca Sports Fields, home of the Capalaba Bulldogs Football Club on Old Cleveland Road.
Residents from across Redlands Coast are welcome, whether they celebrate Diwali every year or are discovering the festival for the first time. The programme offers an afternoon of family activities, food and entertainment before the evening fireworks.
From Indian street food to cultural performances
Food will be one of the attractions, with trucks offering South Indian and other Indian dishes. Visitors can explore different regional flavours while enjoying the performances and activities taking place around the grounds.
Clothing and jewellery stalls will also form part of the festival, giving visitors an opportunity to browse traditional designs and accessories associated with Indian celebrations.
Live music and dance performances will provide much of the afternoon’s entertainment. The programme is intended to introduce audiences to aspects of Indian culture through performances that can be enjoyed by people of different ages and backgrounds.
For younger visitors, the advertised activities include face painting, henna and a jumping castle. Families can move between the entertainment, food trucks and children’s activities throughout the afternoon.
The celebration is scheduled to finish with a fireworks display. Organisers have advertised the fireworks as the evening finale, although a specific launch time has not been published.
Why Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals. It is commonly associated with the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil.
Traditions vary across regions and communities. Many Hindu families light small oil lamps called diyas, decorate their homes, share sweets and gather with relatives. Jain and Sikh communities also observe important religious occasions around this period, although their traditions and meanings differ.
In 2026, the main day of Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November. Capalaba’s community festival will take place the weekend before, allowing residents to join a public celebration ahead of the traditional festival date.
For those unfamiliar with Diwali, the Capalaba gathering offers an accessible introduction to its cultural traditions. Music, food, clothing and dance provide different ways to experience the celebration without needing prior knowledge of its customs.
A festival with growing roots in Redlands
The Brisbane Bayside South Indian Association has previously organised Diwali celebrations in Redlands, with a focus on cultural exchange and bringing people from different backgrounds together.
The association describes itself as an independent, multicultural community organisation promoting Indian heritage and encouraging connections within the wider Redlands community.
The festival has also received support through Redland City Council’s community funding programmes in previous years. Council is supporting the 2026 celebration, which continues the association’s efforts to make Indian cultural events accessible to local residents.
For Capalaba, hosting Diwali at a familiar community sporting venue brings another use to grounds better known for weekend football. Families who might never attend a traditional Diwali gathering can experience its food, entertainment and customs close to home.
What visitors need to know

The official event listing identifies parking and public toilets at the venue and states that the event welcomes people with access needs. Visitors requiring specific accessibility arrangements should contact the organiser before attending.
